Principals visit from post-primary schools

Principals from Post Primary Schools in Arklow and Wicklow have visited the school and have spoken to 5th and 6th classes. They have been invited to all the open days/evenings in the secondary schools in the area to help them decide where they will go in the future.

Cross-Country Relays

The children from 3rd to 6th class participated in the Wicklow Invitational Cross-Country Relays in Avondale on September 25th. The weather was lovely and all the children ran really well. 4th class girls Sarah Curry, Lucia Whelan, Alannah Delahunt and Olivia Pennell came first in the 4th class race. 5th class girls Leila Fitzpatrick, Anna Morrissey, Sloane Rangitaawa and Maria Moorehouse came 3rd in the 5th class race. Well done everybody and great day had by all!

National Tree Day

National Tree DayThe children in 3rd and 4thclass (Ms. Ruane’s Room) and 3rd class (Ms. Gibney’s Room) were invited to Glendalough for National Tree Day on Wednesday 26th September. They took part in activities such as treasure trails, guess the age and height of a tree, stick puzzles, pine-cone and spoon races, to learn in a fun way with the National Park team about our native and non-native trees. The weather was beautiful and a everyone had a super time.

Tug of War

On Friday 28th September, Wicklow Sports Partnership came to the school to teach 3rd and 4th classes the rules and skills needed for Tug of War. “Foot under the rope, lift, squat down, hold the tension and pull” is how it’s done!

GAA Blitz

On October 2nd Fifth and Sixth Class took part in Arklow Positive Aging week GAA blitz in Páirc an Phiarsaigh. They played constantly for over two hours and a great day was had by all.

Trail Challenge

The children from 3rd – 6th class took part in the 3km Trail Run in Avondale Forest on October 16th. Every child received a medal for participating in and completing the run. Well done to Leila Fitzpatrick who also received a medal for coming third in the group of 5th class girls from schools all over Co. Wicklow. Well done everybody!

The Pure Mile Awards

Pure Mile Awards Brittas BayOn Tuesday October 16th the Pure Mile Awards 2018 took place in Aughrim. The children in 5th and 6th class received The Best Education Award and a cheque for the school for €300 for their Pure Mile project on Enereilly Beach in June. This involved a litter pick with parents and studies of the flora and fauna, marine life, types of litter found, seals and selkies and the history of Enereilly. Maria Moorehouse, Matas Krunkaitis and Ríonach Fleming attended the Award ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the 5th and 6th class. Congratulations and well done to all!

Awards

Sixth class students entered the Ghost Story Competition for Arklow Library. We had two winners, Sophie Reynolds and Will Fitzpatrick. These stories will be on display in Arklow Library from Thursday 25th to Wednesday 31st October. Well done to all. The standard was excellent.

Lauren Beacom, Des Brennan, Eva Fitzpatrick, Leila Fitzpatrick and Amy Noble represented the school in the Leinster Schools Swimming Gala on October 21st. Eva, Leila and Amy have qualified for the Irish Nationals to be held in February. They also took home 2 gold’s and a silver. Well done to all!

Sarah Curry and Keira Delahunt represented the school in the Interschool’s Horse-Riding Competition in Killossery Lodge Stud, Swords on October 14th. They came 2nd in jumps in the team round. Well done girls!

Accord

On October 23rd fifth and sixth classes had their talk on Growing Up from Accord. They will return in May 2019 for a follow up talk.

Developing School Post

The teaching post which was provisionally sanctioned until October 26th has been provisionally extended to December 31st 2018 due to new enrolment enquires. If however enrolments do not take place and we do not achieve an enrolment number of 150 by December 31st 2018 the post will be suppressed and we will revert from 6 class groups to 5 class groups after Christmas. The present enrolment figure is 148.

Open /Enrolment Day

School Open Day Brittas BayThe Open/Enrolment day for Junior Infants starting in September 2019 will take place in school on Friday 18th January 2019. There are still places available. If you have a child due to start in September 2019, please ensure we have your name on the list.

Thank You

Thank you to all the parents who accompanied teachers with children on the various trips. Your time and co-operation is much appreciated.

Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to all parents who have paid voluntary contributions. As there is always a shortfall from the Department of Education, these contributions are necessary to pay the running costs of the school.

Halloween Dress-up and Sausage Friday

All children are invited to dress up on Thursday October 25th and please remember to bring in your €2 for Sausage Thursday.

Dates for your Diary

  • First Holy Communion and Confirmation Meeting: Monday, 5th November at 7.30pm
  • Parent / Teacher meetings: Thursday, 8th November from 4.00pm – 9.00pm (Individual meeting times were sent home on 22nd October).
  • School closed on Friday 9th November for a teacher in-service day.
  • Christmas plays: Wednesday, 5th & Thursday, 6th December.
  • Have an enjoyable and safe Halloween break everybody!
