The staff and students at Brittas Bay National School are gearing up for the return of the annual Garden Open Day. Students having been digging, planting and potting-up in the run-up-to their annual Garden Open Day which returns Wednesday, 15th June – the first time since 2019 – and all are welcome to attend.
The Garden Open Day, which is always a huge success, invites parents, grandparents, friends and members of the public to the school to show off its grounds which boasts a polytunnel and raised beds stuffed with vegetables. All organically grown, the vegetables and plants will be for sale on the day.
This year children have tried their hand at growing peas, potatoes, scallions, beetroot, rainbow chard, strawberries, beans and lots of beautifully fragrant herbs – all cared for by the very knowledgeable children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class under the watchful eye and guiding-hand of the school gardener, Wendy Nairn.
Opening up after Covid Restricions
Commenting on the up-coming event, Úna Gallinagh, Principal of the school said, “The vision of Scoil Mhuire Réalt na Mara in Brittas Bay is to promote the physical and emotional wellbeing of all pupils, and to develop their expressive, artistic, creative and intellectual abilities to each pupil’s full capacity. The school garden gives us an opportunity to fulfil this ethos. We’re especially glad this year, after all of the lockdowns and restrictions have been lifted, to be able to showcase of the produce we have. The garden provides each student with an enormous sense of fulfilment when they see they seed that they planted flourishing and growing and producing flowers and food. The garden also acts a great opportunity for the parents and community to get involved with the school. It is a real reminder of what a fantastic community and school spirit we have at Brittas Bay National School. We look forward to a great day and urge all of the community and families in the area to visit and go home with some beautiful plants.”
The Garden Day takes place on Wednesday, 15th June at Scoil Mhuire Réalt Na Mara, Ballinacarrig, Brittas Bay and is open to the public from 1pm – 2.30pm.
